Term Paper (Due Date: December 28, 2012)

You need to submit a term paper which primarily describes an interesting application of Bayesian networks in a field of your choice.

In addition to submitting the report, you would be required to give a detailed presentation (10-15 mins.). The presentations will be held on December 29, 2012 but the report is due on December 28 (mid night).

I will use turnitin to check the reports for plagiarism.

Assignment # 2 (Due Date: November 17, 2012)

Using SMILE API, develop a simple interface (either command prompt-based or GUI-based) that allows a user to perform the following tasks:
  • reads any Bayesian network file (SMILE covers almost all popular formats)
  • displays list of variables (in the read file) and their marginal probabilities
  • provides option to enter evidence to any number of nodes and shows posterior probabilities of the remaining nodes

You would demonstrate your program in the class (it should not take more than 3-4 minutes to present the above mentioned features of your program).

This is an individual assignment and each student would be presenting (and submitting) their own program.

Assignment # 1 (Due Date: October 24, 2012)

Develop a Bayesian network of a real world situation. Feel free to use any knowledge acquisition techniques (Noisy-Or, CAST logic) if you find it hard to specify all the conditional probability values in your BN. You can work in a group of 2 to develop and analyze your BN. Use both GeNIe and IBAYes for model building.

You can find many useful models in the book "Bayesian Networks: A Practical Guide to Applications".

In addition to presenting your problem, you need to submit a report too (the reference above would again help you in how to present a Bayesian Network).
